Education Daily to You

By Sue Sudarak

Here at Language Arts Workshop (LAW), we take a critical look at issues that many adults and children are facing in today’s education system in Malaysia. It is much certain that everyone can relate to this topic! There are four issues many of us are concerned deeply about: our health & wellbeing, learning/working environment, literacy skills, and most importantly, our social-emotional learning skills.

We believe that these concerns could be addressed easily. We, parents, teachers, and policy makers have the power and responsibility to make education fun, practical, effective, and efficient at home or school. However, are we doing enough to prepare the younger generation for the future education while nurturing their Social & Emotional Learning Skills (SELS)?

At LAW , we diligently practice the Whole Child Approach in education . We are constantly looking after each other’s SELS while strengthening our learning quality through Experiential and Personalized Learning.

Below is a sample video of how we create a Lifelong Learning Culture at one of LAW events that promotes Experiential Learning for everyone! This event is one of our memorable moments that filled with passion, inspiration, challenges, and achievements amongst teachers and children.

Addicted to Learning

When you know that you want to learn something more effectively but don’t know how to go about, read on to find out how I have become addicted to learning!

Addicted to Learning is the answer to most Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) from my students and their parents: Ms. Sue, why are you so energetic and happy all the time?

Well, something that parents and people in general would love to hear is not the WHY, but the HOW. Here we go…

We always have a choice!

HOW #1: I choose to live a happy and peaceful life regardless of how busy I am with my daily work. It’s important to me that the people I’m hanging out with genuinely display their enthusiasm for learning and optimism toward life too!

HOW #2: I LOVE LEARNING and I usually accept life new challenges with open arms. To be honest, I am not a techy kind of person, but I managed to develop and lead our online Speech Communication Arts (SCA), Communication Skills Individual (CSI), Linguistic Macro Skills (LMS), Performance Arts (PA) classes, and Teacher Training Program (TTP) with ease and confidence! The 7th Language Arts Festival on the ZOOM platform is one of my proudest achievements so far. Big thanks to, LAW’s members for making learning FUN. Cheers to years to come!

Wait a minute, do I sound complaining? Well, I didn’t mean to. The point is… Without enthusiasm for learning, nothing great can be achieved. Yep, that’s HOW I have become so energetic and happy all the time!

I have achieved many great things (big and small). I have overcome all sorts of struggles while learning how to learn (on my own) since I was 7 years old. I will be 51 this year and I think it’s time for me to share my secrets to effective learning strategies.

My dear readers, especially parents and educators, do you want to hear your kids/students say that they are addicted to learning (like Ms. Sue)? If yes, ask yourself the following questions:

How do I usually demonstrate my interest, passion and LOVE for learning? We all know that kids learn by examples. Show them that you want to learn too!

What are the things that my kids/students really enjoy doing (at home/in class)? Let’s be honest! It’s all about finding interest/passion that keeps us going and wanting to learn more about it. How often do you communicate about the importance of personal interest/hobbies/favourite activities with your kids/students? Do you stop your child’s music, dance, singing, drama, non-academic classes because you want them to ‘concentrate’ on the school exams? If yes, I think you should rethink a little bit here.

Trust me, this approach may deprive their hope and spirit from becoming a happy learner. School exams and academic achievements are important too, but kids should be shown effective time management skills at an early age.

Since I was 7, my parents introduced me to many ‘non-academic’ classes and practical life skills, but my most favourite subjects have always been in the English Communication Arts and Performance Arts fields.

As time went by, the not-so-essential school subjects that I was interested in had led me to what I do and who I am now. I had never wanted to be a teacher, but because of my children’s education, in 1998 I decided to update myself with new teaching/learning skills.

Gradually, English Linguistic Macro Skills, Parenting, Psychology, Communication Skills, Performance Arts, and Journalism have become my second nature, my interest, my passion, my expertise, and my career! Now, I can proudly say that I have discovered my own blueprint for success. In other words, you have to be addicted to learning first, then everything will fall into place. Want to hear more?
