Translation is a difficult skill, but it is one of those fun and rewarding activities I like to do in my Communication Arts Program (CAP). Teaching translation skills is time-consuming because it requires great patience, deep understanding, and persistent enthusiasm to achieve desirable outcomes. Troubles with Direct Translation by Happy Miho demonstrates the mentioned qualities in a learner, who sees the validity and values of translation as a practical activity to enhance reading and writing skills.

That’s right! Learners need to be analytical and have strong preferences for verbal/written linguistic learning strategies. Translation skill is highly beneficial and can have positive impact on language learning experience where English as a Second Language (ESL) learners are trained to search for the most appropriate words/phrases to convey the meaning of the original text accurately, clearly, and flexibly.

Troubles with Direct Translation

不自然な直訳

I have been taking Teacher Training Program (TTP) at Language Arts Workshop (LAW) since November 2020 to improve my English Communication and Linguistic Macro Skills (LMS). Writing is one of the areas that I want to improve, so I decided to translate my students’ Japanese essays into English.

私は、英語コミュニケーションと4技能の向上を目指して2020年11月よりLanguage Arts Workshop (LAW)で英語教授法を習っています。その中でも「Writing」を上達させたいと思い、生徒が書いた日本語の作文を英語に翻訳しました。

Even though I have opportunities to translate many Japanese documents into English for my work before, I am still struggling with translation skills. Ms. Sue, my LMS coach at LAW pointed out that my translations often sound ambiguous in English. We discussed that I should look at the overall meaning and message of the original essays when translating my students’ essays.

以前、仕事で日本語の書類を英語に翻訳したこともありますが、今でも翻訳をすることが苦手です。LAWの4技能コーチであるスーさんから、私の翻訳の表現が英語では曖昧に聞こえることが多いと指摘されました。そこで、私たちは、生徒の作文を翻訳する際には、オリジナルの文から全体的な意味やメッセージを読み解くほうが良いと話し合いました。

It was then when I realized that Japanese expressions from the original texts could be interpreted in different angles. Any translation could cause misunderstandings unless we deeply understand the author’s intention, culture, and message clearly.

私は、話し合いの中で、原文の日本語表現は、様々な角度から解釈できることに気がつきました。翻訳により異なった解釈ができるため、作者が意図することや文化、そしてメッセージを明確に理解しなければ、どのような翻訳でも誤解を生じる可能性があります。

Here is an example of my translation.：　私の翻訳の例です。

  　   Japanese sentence:

目標達成へこつこつ努力 :  Mokuhyou tasseihe kotukotu doryoku   

Direct translation : Effort little by little to achieve the goal

( 直訳  ：  目標達成へコツコツ努力 )

The author’s intention  :  Achieving my goals by making small efforts.

( 作者の意図 ： 小さな努力を積み重ねて目標を達成する。)

Polished sentence in English : Diligence and Effort lead to Achievement.

( 英語での洗練された文章 ： 勤勉さと努力が成果につながる。)

Generally Japanese daily expression is so figurative. It’s hard to find just the right English phrases to match. Therefore, it was difficult for me to translate how my students really felt about their chosen topic because I wanted to maintain the original context.

一般的に日本語の日常表現はとても比喩的です。日本語にぴったり合う英語表現を探すのは大変です。そのため、生徒が書いた元の文脈を残して感情を翻訳するのは、難しいことでした。

Why Japanese prefer ambiguous expressions?

なぜ日本人は曖昧な表現を好むのでしょうか？

Japan is a homogenous country where Japanese prefer to maintain harmony in the society. I think we are trained to avoid conflicts in society. We are taught to observe other people’s feelings during a conversation no matter how vague certain expressions seem. The above example of my direct translation may not make much sense in English context, but I think the Japanese sentence is perfectly understood by Japanese.

日本は同質、均質という意味を持つホモジニアス社会に住み、人々は社会の調和を保つことを好みます。私達は、社会での争いを避けるように指導されてきたように思います。曖昧な表現であっても、会話の中で相手の気持ちを察するように教えられています。上記の直訳の例は、英語の文脈ではあまり意味を成さないかもしれませんが、日本語の文章は日本人には完璧に理解されると思います。

In my opinion, the English language can be so direct; the word usage must be precise that is almost opposite of our language. To communicate effectively, we have to explain/express our thoughts clearly by knowing who we are communicating with. As a result, I have learned that audience is utmost important in all forms of communication .

個人的には、英語はとても直接的な表現ができる言語だと思います。そして、私たちの言語とは、ほとんど正反対の明確な言語です。円滑なコミュニケーションを取るためには、相手のことを知った上で自分の考えを明確に説明しなければなりません。あらゆる意思の疎通において相手を考えることが最も重要である事を学びました。

The early drafts of my translations were so hard to be understood because I tried to maintain my students’ original meaning and message. I spent so much time translating each piece of document as well.

私の最初の翻訳では、生徒のオリジナルの意味やメッセージを残そうとしたため、理解してもらうことが、とても難しかったです。その上に1文ずつ文章を訳すことにとても時間がかかりました。

All in all, through translating exercises, I have learned that we can avoid Troubles with Direct Translation by deeply understanding the culture and colloquialism of both Japanese and English.

今回の翻訳演習では、日本語と英語の文化や口語表現を深く理解することで、不自然な直訳を回避できることを学びました。
