A reflection article by Chong Zun Sheng

I started to prepare for my Communication Skill Individual (CSI) grade 3 with my teachers and friends in June 2023. Preparing for this exam has been a transformative journey to me.
What is CSI?
The Communication Skills exam for individuals (CSI) focuses on oral presentation such as conversation, talk, interview, and discussion. It created by Trinity College London.
I am taking CSI Grade 3 this year. For this Grade, I am required to engage in a conversation, talk about a current concern, and recommend a place of interest to the examiner.

CSI is best learned with others!
Learning English has been quite tough for me as I tend to translate my thought in Chinese before I speak or write. I tend to give a slow response during impromptu speaking activity and group discussion too. Fortunately, I have supportive, patient, and understanding classmates and coaches to motivate me throughout my CSI learning journey.

My mum and coaches at Language Arts Workshop (LAW) always encourage me to share my learning process through reflection. Ms. Sue, the principal of LAW, loves to organise various literary events for us so we can practice our CSI tasks. The Language Arts Festival (LAF), Podcast Showcase, Book & Writers Club are some of my favourite events.

By watching other students’ presentation and observing their works, I learn to analyze and improve my communication and literacy skills that I don’t get to learn at school. For example, interview skills, writing a blog post, and conducting a talk show. I have improved my self-analytical skills, script writing, speech delivery, and visual aids design. I am more comfortable, confident, and independent when working on difficult topics now.

My preparations for CSI3…
1. Outline/Brainstorm
2. Research/Point form

3. Paraphrasing
4. Pie chart

5. Full script
6. Visual Aids Design

7. Various Speaking Activities
8. Recording & Editing

Message for Malaysian students & parents
Learning new skills can be tough, but don’t give up. We will gain more experience and be proud of our achievements once we succeed. The hard work we put in will be rewarding!
